More splitting and shaving of bamboo for the roof slats. Around lunchtime we got the visit of an Ecuadorian that has worked in bamboo for over 20 years and came to Galapagos with his family on vacation. He showed us how to treat bamboo with fire to change some of its mechanical properties and resistance to bugs. When you heat the bamboo cane the sugars inside turn hard, and gives the bamboo - according to this guys, more strength. Tomorrow is hopefully the last day of real work, and on Saturday we are going to have an opening.
